RISK/SAFETY SPECIALIST I (5/10/12)

The Travis County (Austin, TX) Transportation and Natural Resources (TNR)  Department is seeking a RISK/SAFETY SPECIALIST I to assist in the planning, development and implementation of the Department's work safety program. 
Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for assisting in the planning, development and implementation of the work safety program for the Transportation and Natural Resources Department.
  • Provides incident response and investigation; data collection, data entry, and generation of reports and trend analysis.
  • Coordinates fire drills; inspection of facilities, vehicles, equipment; assessment, maintenance, acquisition and inventory control of personal protective equipment (PPE) including management of associated database; development and presentation of safety training; maintenance of the hazard communication program; fire extinguisher program maintenance; coordinates safety recognition program, assists with the school crossing guard program.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Personnel Management, Human Resources Management, Public Administration, Business Administration, Environmental Sciences, Safety Engineering, Chemistry or a directly related field AND one (1) year of directly related demonstrated experience; OR, any combination of education and experience that has been achieved and is equivalent to the stated education and experience and required knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of this job.

Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, or Special Requirements:
Valid Texas Driver's License.

Internship Description
We are looking for a talented and motivated individual seeking to expand their horizon and gain valuable work experience. During your internship with WL, you will have the opportunity to participate in the following projects:

  • Upgrade and improve our Safety Policy Procedure Manual to conform with our Vision, Mission, Values, and Objectives statements
  • Catalog, consolidate, and summarize all current occupational safety training programs and materials developed by Corporate EHS and local plants so they can be shared among all facilities

This internship venue will be split between WL’s Corporate Headquarters at Texas Motor Speedway in Ft Worth, TX and our manufacturing plant in Bowie, TX.

Internship Qualifications

  • Available to work as an intern for the period May 2012 – August 2012, dependent on class schedule
  • Current enrollment as a Graduate-level college student for the 2011 – 2012 school year and pursuing a MS in Safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, or related field
  • GPA of 3.0 or better within major
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
